Crack That Effing Geode!

A couple of weeks ago, Kim and I ordered some geodes from a guy in Kentucky. Within days, the package had arrived at Kim’s apartment office. “It feels like someone sent you a box of rocks” said the lady as she handed her the box of rocks. The following Friday afternoon we proceeded to her apartment after work to break them open and discover the vast treasures inside!

Here’s a quick recap of the way things transpired:
- four geodes each
- I ended up with the biggest one (had to be like 8 pounds) and the smallest one (hand-sized)
- wasp kept visiting us on the balcony and freaking us out
- two hammers and a chisel constantly (and quite loudly) hammering on rocks
- probably annoying neighbors
- two and a half hours of hammering on rocks
- not as easy as they make it sound on the internet
- all of Kim’s were pretty much completely solid :(
- mine had crystals but were pretty close to solid also
- the best looking one is pictured above

Next time we want to get some from Mexico or Brazil. And we’ve better perfected our technique for cracking them open. Woot!

Geopalooza!

Kim and I finally hit up Geopalooza today, and it was pretty cool! The geodes were definitely the best part, although they had a lot of fossils, too. I would have liked to have seen more rocks, though, overall. There was a pretty neat room with tons of rocks and minerals under ultraviolet lighting. It’s fun to see how they glow different colors, but there were no signs telling us what the rocks were in that room.

Someday we’re going to go to Brazil and go on our own geology adventure. I have GOT to get one to those giant geodes! zomg!

They had a geode cracking place set up at the end of the exhibit. You could choose a geode and have them crack it open for you. I got one, of course! It’s pretty awesome.
